This topic provides information about billing patients.

Background

The state legislature created UTHCPC as the prototype of a quality mental health care institution with a mission to do the following to improve the quality of life of the mentally disabled for a fee:

Providing care to the mentally ill

Conducting research into the causes and cures of mental illness

Patient Account Services office hours

The Patient Account Services office is open 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday.

Exceptions: The office is closed on holidays.

Payment plan

UTHCPC makes every effort to cooperate with the patient and guarantor to establish successful payment plans.

Determining charges

This table describes the process for determining what to charge each patient:

Stage	Description
1	Patients and their families to provide the following information as completely and accurately as possible: Total family income Total number of dependents in the family Insurance
2	Patient Account Services verifies the information provided in Stage 1.
3	Patient Account Services computes the Self-Pay Classification using a sliding scale based on the information provided in Stage 1.
4	Patient Account Services computes charges based on services: Ordered by an authorized professional Documented in the medical record Medically necessary for treatment
5	Patient Account Services charges the patient or guarantor the percentage of the total charges owed based on the percentage indicated on the Self-Pay Classification sliding scale.
