Configuring Netscape Communicator

This  guide will aid you in running Netscape Communicator for the first time after installation and step you through the configuration process so that you can access the TMC library and send and receive e-mail. To install the Netscape Communicator program, place the Auto Install CD in your CD-ROM drive and wait until the Install Shield program starts the installation for you.  Answer all questions with the default by pressing the Enter key on your keyboard for all question except
"Do you wish to review the ReadMe file now"  to this question answer NO.  Press Enter 2 more times and your PC will re-boot and Netscape will be installed at this point.

Once Netscape has been installed on  your PC and you have rebooted your machine, you will find that a Netscape Icon  has been  added to your Windows 95 desktop.  This icon is your starting point for running Netscape Communicator.  Double clicking on this icon for  the first time after Netscape Communicator has been installed will run the New Profile Setup program in Netscape which allows you to customize the application by adding items related to your e-mail account, mail server.  Some of these items have been pre configured for you, while other must be entered in by you at this time.  The information that you will require to configure Netscape is on your student information sheet that you were given at the beginning of the semester.

Below, is a screen shot of what you will see when Netscape is run for the first time along with information on what you must do to configure the program at each step.  Compare the screen shots that you see on your computer with what is provided in this document and follow the instructions provided with each section.

CLICK on the Next > button to continue on

In the Full Name: text window, type in your Full name just as you would like to see it in print.  This name will be associated with your e-mail address below.

In the Email Address (if available) text window, type in your E-mail name as provided on your documentation followed by @uth.tmc.edu.  e.g. Jane.C.Doe@uth.tmc.edu.  You may give this address out to others who wish to exchange e-mail with you.  With this address, anyone in the world can send you e-mail via the Internet. Remember that there are no spaces and the address is not case sensitive, i.e. upper and lower case characters are not distinguishable by the mail server.

In the Profile name: text field, you can type in your first name or full name, this should be already done for you by the system.  The profile name is only used if more than one person uses Netscape on the same PC.  In this case, when the Netscape Communicator is started, a User Profile window will appear that asks the user to identify themselves to the program so that the users default settings for e-mail etc. are loaded.  After typing your response to the profile name, click the Next > button.

The Outgoing mail [SMTP] server: text box should contain mail.uth.tmc.edu, if not, type the information in at this time and then click the Next > button.

In the Mail server user name: text box type in your userid as provided in your documentation from UT if it is not already there.  In the Incoming Mail Server: text box type mail.uth.tmc.edu, choose IMAP or POP3 and then click the Next > button.

Lastly, in the News [NNTP] server: text box, type in news.uth.tmc.edu if it is not there already then click Finish.  Netscape Communicator will start with your configuration for e-mail etc. If you have questions regarding the use of the program, Netscape has provided excellent help documents provided in  Help pull down menu.

At this time Netscape has been installed and configured and you are ready to receive Email and browse the WEB.  Remember that you MUST connect to the Network via Dialup Networking First in order to retrieve any new Email or connect to any WEB servers.
